Knowing ‘Tomorrow’

There is more you said
than the matter-of-fact,
that entire lives are preconceived
by the revolving orbits in space
moving in mathematical trajectories
around a flickering sun,
tracing out ellipses in the dark,
alighting destinies, unlocking a door
of which the other side was always known.

I do not question faiths,
faith’s absence stings me.
I watch as you cross the street
sure of the signs, the vehicles moving,
as if there was nothing to stop
you getting to the other side
where a small boy, bare-chested, holds up a newspaper.
“Is it today’s?”, you ask,
he stares back at you
as if to solicit an answer.
